Malawi Queens coach courts Nam over lack of test matches

Malawi Queens coach Peace Chawinga-Kaluwa has set up a contingency plan for the national team in the absence of friendly matches.

Few weeks ago Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) indicated that the Queens would travel to Australia without taking part in friendly matches.

Queens were expected to regroup on Monday ahead of the World Cup set for Sydney, Australia to run from August 7 to 16.

Kaluwa said she would meet with Nam officials before outlining her plans to rebuild the team.

“Of course I am eyeing friendly games against local sides as well as the teams. I will come back to you once I discuss with Nam members,” she said.

Former Malawi Queens assistant coach, Sam Kanyenda, backed the idea of engaging men teams in friendly games.

“The men teams such as Akabawi and Libomba have some attributes which help women teams improve various aspects of the game. The men teams have height and they know how to jump. This gives women teams a good yardstick to measure their jumps and passes,” he said.

In the opening game, Queens will play continental rivals South Africa on August 7 before playing Sri Lanka the following day.

The Malawi national netball team will then play Singapore on August 9.

The Netball World Cup is expected to end on August 16.
