Malawi Netball Queens have a shortfall of K20 million for their trip to the Fast5 Netball World Series set for Hisense Arena in Melbourne, Australia at the end of this month.
Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) General Secretary, Carol Bapu, disclosed this yesterday when the association received a donation of K500,000 from Old Mutual in Blantyre.
“We are really grateful for the support that Old Mutual has given us. They have helped us to move a step up as we seek to participate in the Fast5 World Series. So far, we have received support from Airtel Money amounting to K14.4 million and K700,000 from Unicaf University. It means that we need about K20 million to travel because our budget is at K35 million,” she said.
Old Mutual’s Corporate Affairs and Marketing Executive, Linda Poya, said they felt obliged to help the senior netball team.
“I would like to demonstrate Old Mutual’s commitment by handing over a sponsorship of K500,000 which will go towards the preparations of the games taking place in Australia this month end,” she said.
Malawi Queens’ Coach, Griffin Saenda, his assistant, Sam Kanyenda, Team Manager, Jane Kachali, who is also Nam Treasurer, players Grace Mwafulirwa- Mhango, Towera Vinkhumbo- Nyirenda and Joanna Kachilika, and Southern Region Netball League General Secretary, Annie Hanjahanja attended the function.
