Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) will host a Tri- Nation tournament to help the Malawi National Netball Team tune up for the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games slated for July 28 to August 8.
The Tri-Nation tournament, which will feature Zimbabwe and Namibia, will be staged at Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (Kuhes) Sports Complex from July 12 to 16.
Nam Vice President Chimwemwe Bakali confirmed the development, saying under-19 national teams for the respective nations will also take part in the tournament to prepare for Region 5 Games which Malawi will host in Lilongwe in December.
“We (Nam) championed this tournament to enable the Malawi Queens to use it in readiness for the Commonwealth Games. We are busy working on the ground to ensure the Queens prepare thoroughly for the matches,” he said.
Bakali said it was a ranking tournament; as such, World Netball certified umpires will handle the games.
“Umpires will come from Lesotho, Botswana and South Africa to ensure a free and fair tournament as the results will be used for ranking purposes. As hosts, we will provide logistics including transportation and accommodation for the umpires,” he said.
Bakali said Nam had secured K11 million from the government, through Malawi National Council of Sports, to stage the event.
“We thank the government for coming forward to support us through Sports Council. The money is solely for camping purposes. As for visiting teams Zimbabwe and Namibia, they will use their own expenses,” he said.
Sports Council spokesperson Edgar Ntulumbwa could not be reached for comment while the institution’s marketing officer Faith Mlauzi said she could not comment.
