Malawi Red Cross donates to flood victims

Malawi Red Cross Society (MRCS) on Monday donated food items to flood victims in T/A Pemba’s area in Salima District.

The families who are in Msumwa, Kandulu, Lifidzi and Mgwilizano camps were left homeless in February this year due to heavy rains.

Division Chairperson for Salima Red Cross, Andwatch Steven, donated the food items on behalf of MRCS to over 380 households surrounding Kabumbu and Nkwaila villages.

During the donation, he said since the time of flooding, Red Cross has been assisting the households with different foodstuffs and money to ease their situation.

Steven explained that early this year, the families received cash amounting to K50,000 per household to maintain their houses which were destroyed by the floods.

“Due to heavy rains, some people in T/A Pemba’s area were heavily affected by the floods, hence the donation,” Steven said.

Speaking in an interview, one of the beneficiaries, Alaika Kasambwe, thanked MRCS for its continued support to their families.

Kasambwe said the donation will go a long way to help the families.

“During the floods, we lost everything including our crops which were washed away,’’ Kasambwe said.

She thanked MRCS for its continued support throughout the disaster period.

Every year, Airtel Malawi partners with MRCS in disaster response across the country.

This year, Airtel Malawi pumped in K10 million towards the disaster response programme which has benefited flood victims from Karonga and Salima districts.

Over 150 families from T/A Pemba in Salima have been displaced by flash floods from Lifidzi River which have destroyed houses, crops and roads.
