Malawi Red Cross encourages financial assistance to cyclone survivors

Malawi Red Cross Society has encouraged well-wishers to offer financial assistance to victims of Tropical Storms Anna and Gombe.
This follows a number of donations that have been made toward the survivors, which mainly includes foodstuff.
Speaking in Phalombe when the association recently made a donation of cash transfers worth K13.2 million to 332 households, which received K40 thousand each, the society’s Secretary General McBain Kanogodza said the survivors need to be economically empowered.
“We want to economically empower them. So they can have normal lives again. It requires a lot for that to happen, but we are taking the first step. We have distributed the cash which we received from USAID. The program is going well but there are an extended number of families that were affected. We are talking of five group village head men but we are only reaching to two today,” he said.
To concur, one of the survivors, Loveness Sailesi, hailed the initiative by the society.
“Water washed away our crops and houses. We have been receiving donation in term items, but we really needed this financial help as well. We will use it to replace some of the items we lost, as well as food,” she said.
