Malawi refs off to Tanzania, South Africa

By Williams Gondwa:

Malawian referees Ishmael Chizinga, Godfrey Nkhakananga and their assistants Clemence Kanduku, Edward Kambatuwa and Joe Nyauti have been invited to be part of the officiating personnel at the 2019 Sportspesa Cup scheduled to run from Tuesday to Saturday in Tanzania.

The five-day tournament will be held in Dar-es-Salam and Mwanza with four teams from Tanzania and another four from Kenya competing.

Some of the notable teams scheduled to compete during the tournament are giants Gor Mahia, Simba, Yanga and AFC Leopards.

The team to be crowned champions of the cup will play English Premier League side Everton.

Chizinga and his crew will leave for the East African country Sunday.

Football Association of Malawi Referees Development Manager, Maxwell Mtonga, said the association is happy to see local referees gaining recognition in other countries.

“Apparently this is not the first time Tanzania has requested referees from Malawi to help them in officiation. You remember that there was another time that Tanzania requested us to provide referees to go and officiate their legends game and that was three years ago. So our referees are being recognised across the region and we are pleased,” Mtonga said.

He said female Fifa assistant referee Bernadetta Kwimbira-Nzika left the country on Thursday to officiate a friendly international in South Africa between Banyana Banyana and the Netherlands today.

Kwimbira-Nzika will remain in the Rainbow Nation after the match for Tuesday’s encounter between South Africa and Sweden.

“This is good news for our referees and we are very thankful that our referees are doing a good job. Such recognition is not easy to come by,” Mtonga said.
