Malawi remembers John Chilembwe
Thousands of Malawians on Friday gathered at Providence Industrial Mission (PIM) in Chiradzulu to attend prayers to remember Martyr Reverend John Chilembwe.
Contrary to the tradition, President Peter Mutharika was not there but rather delegated Minister of Finance Goodall Gondwe to be guest of honour.
Gondwe asked Malawians to emulate Chilembwe’s quest for a peaceful, democratic and self-reliant nation.
“It’s possible for this country to develop if all of us put efforts and skills together,” said Gondwe who consistently acknowledged that his speech was made on behalf of President Mutharika.
Chilembwe is Malawi’s celebrated national hero and January 15 is public holiday to remember his courage to fight the colonial rule. His face has also been used on Malawi’s bank notes.
He established PIM church in 1900 at Mbombwe in Chiradzulu; but was shot dead on February 25, 1915.
Notable political figures present at the function among others included, Former president Bakili Muluzi, Minister of Youth Henry Musa, Minister of Industry and Trade Joseph Mwanamveka and Minister of Sports Grace Chiumia
