Over 30,000 Malawian returnees from South Africa have been repatriated back home since the start of the exercise on May 23 2020, immigration authorities have said.

Mwanza Border Immigration spokesperson Pasqually Zulu hailed the joint multi-sectoral approach between key border agencies, including non-governmental organisations and civil society organisations, for successful operations when receiving returnees.

This includes Covid testing, observance of health protocols and border checks which, he said, are “done timely”.

“On April 1, the formation received a total of 551 returnees of which 255 were men and women were 216 while minors were 80,” Zulu said.

He said returnees had been flocking back home due to a number of factors, including economic challenges, in South Africa in the wake of the Covid global health crisis.

In Malawi, the pandemic has claimed over 1,000 lives.
