Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) and the Immigration Department on Friday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will see them working together in enforcing tax compliance.

This pact would see modernisation of tax payments and ensure that foreign nationals working in the country comply with local tax laws.

MRA Commissioner General, Tom Malata, said the tax body was implementing modernisation reforms to increase compliance rate and broaden the tax base.

“We are introducing a system called Msonkho Online which will be an integrated system. We are integrating with counterpart, such as the Immigration Department. So, instead of working manually, we will be doing things online and for expatriates that work in the country, we will be able to include them in the tax system online,” Malata said.

Director General of Immigration and Citizenship Services, Masauko Medi, said the MoU was a hallmark of technological development.

“This MoU will allow us to work hand-in-hand with MRA and avoid fraud payments. We are digitising our registry,” Medi said.

He added that the system also resonates with the direction of their department in digitising all immigration and citizenship services.

“Currently, we are also yet to finalise the E-Visa system where applicants will be able to apply, get feedback and make appropriate payments online. We are also upgrading the passport issuance system and introducing the E-Passport system, thereby meeting global practice of e-passports,” Medi said.
