Malawi Revenue Authority returns Kamlepo Kalua’s vehicles

The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) Tuesday returned three vehicles it seized from fire-brand government critic and lawmaker for Rumphi East, Kamlepo Kalua, following a High Court order.

Kalua applied for an injunction on Sunday through his lawyer, Wanangwa Jere, stopping MRA from seizing the vehicles over allegations that he did not pay duty for the vehicles.

The injunction was granted by High Court Judge, Rowland Mvundula.

The three vehicles are a white Mercedes Benz saloon registration number RU 5437 and a Toyota Land Cruiser V8 registration number KA 8966 which belong to his son Penjani and a grounded Jeep, registration number CS31MKGP belonging to Kalua.

Penjani, who was in Nkhata Bay when two of his vehicles were seized, described the happenings as hilarious.

“I am not Kamlepo Kalua, I am his son and I wonder how they could come into my premises with a search warrant indicating the name of my father. My father does not stay here, he stays in Nkolokosa when he is in Blantyre,” he said.

Penjani, popularly known as Fredokiss in entertainment circles, maintained he owns the two vehicles which were seized.

“I am not a politician and whoever is doing this must stop. It is my reputation that is being dented,” he said.

In a statement, released on Thursday last week, MRA accused Kalua of smuggling the vehicles into the country.

“The Toyota Land Cruiser V8 registration number KA 8966 is registered as Nissan Vanette in the Directorate of Road Transport and Safety Service’s MALTIS system while the registration number RU 5437 for the Mercedes Benz does not exist in the MALTIS system,” read part of the statement.

However, Kalua maintains that his son bought the Toyota Land Cruiser locally from an Indian in 2008 and that the Mercedes Benz was bought in 2013 and was cleared in 2014 by MRA.

Kalua, who is also vice president of the People’s Party, has been critical of Mutharika’s administration accusing it of corruption and not doing enough to bail Malawi out of economic malaise.
