Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) has seized 3,500 trays of eggs which were being smuggled into the country from neighbouring Zambia.
MRA Marketing and Communications Manager, Wilma Chalulu, said a track which carried the eggs was intercepted at MRA’s Lirangwe check-point in Blantyre two weeks ago.
“We have seized the consignment because eggs are among restricted poultry products and one needs to obtain a prior permit to import them. Unfortunately, the owners did not produce required papers hence, the seizure,” Chalulu said.
She said the eggs will be destroyed.
Chalulu then appealed to business people to follow proper procedures when importing goods.
“It is always important to know what conditions are there when one wants to import goods. People should contact us and we are always available to provided required information,” Chalulu said.
