Malawi Savings Bank (MSB) has donated medical equipment worth K4.3 million to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital.

The donation, comprising oxygen concentrators, suction machines, sterlising machine and a patient monitor, will go to the pediatric and Chatinkha maternity wards.

Presenting the donation to the hospital, MSB Chief Executive Officer Ian Bonongwe said Malawi has a high infant mortality rate because of lack of life sustaining facilities at hospitals.

“This kind of equipment is essential but very expensive and beyond reach of majority hospitals,” said Bonongwe.

“We know that the equipment donated today is not enough. But it is a glimpse of hope to many people and the nation because QECH is the biggest referral hospital in the country,” said Bonongwe.

QECH Chief Hospital Administrator, Themba Mhango, said the government cannot meet the demand alone, hence the need to partner with the private sector.

He said due to lack of equipment, the hospital fails to deliver quality service.

“The donation is a great relief to the hospital staff as the equipment will ease the pressure of their job,” said Mhango.
