SET FOR FEBRUARY 22—Malawi Sports Awards

Over 100 athletes and officials have been nominated for this year’s Malawi Sports Awards ceremony scheduled for Bingu International Conference Centre in Lilongwe on February 22.

Malawi National Council of Sports Administration Manager, Henry Mereka, said they have embarked on a vetting process to trim the number of nominations to accommodate only the outstanding ones.

Mereka said the vetting process was crucial and committees were determined to select the best.

“After the submission of nominees from associations and a group of selected sports journalists, our committees have started scrutinising the nominations to check whether they deserve to be recognised for their achievements locally and internationally,” he said.

This year’s winners will compete with their foreign counterparts at regional level later in South Africa.

Recently, Mereka said the awards were critical to the aim of professionalising the sport in practice and management in the country.

“Besides being an encouragement to athletes and administrators, the awards are also intended to present an exclusive platform for advertising and marketing to any partnering sponsor,” he said.

The awards will be in the categories of junior female sportsperson, junior male sportsperson, sports administrator, non-citizen, national team of the year, sports woman of the year, sportsman, coach, referee and district of the year, among others.

Sports Council introduced the awards last year when referee Bernadette Kwimbira Nzika emerged the overall winner.
