Malawi swimmers dream of medals
Malawi Aquatic Union (Mau) Chairperson, Willy Tafatatha, is optimistic that local swimmers will excel during the Zone IV Championship, which is underway at African Bible College in Lilongwe.
“We had good preparations for the past weeks and the swimmers are in top form. Definitely, the athletes will win medals at the end of the tournament,” he said.
Over 200 athletes from 14 countries are taking part in the competition.
Some 32 swimmers are representing Malawi during the competition, which winds up Saturday.
The local representatives were selected during Malawi Open Championship held at the same venue a fortnight ago.
Malawi squad includes Ammara Pinto, Mwandeyi Kumwenda, Filipe Gomez and Tayamika Chang’anamuno.
The best athletes will qualify for Fina World Championship scheduled for China in December. Fina is the world governing body for swimming.
Malawi also hosted the tournament in 2008.
Africa Swimming Confederation Zone IV Chairperson, Jace Naidoo, has since hailed Malawi for hosting the competition.
“We are quite excited with facilities and everything is top class. We are expecting a good competition,” Naidoo said.
Some countries that have sent athletes to the competition are Kenya, Mauritius, Seychelles, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Angola, South Africa and Mozambique.
Zimbabwe are the defending champions.
