Malawi targets $300m market at China Expo

Malawi has reiterated its ambitious target of generating over $300 million worth of export orders and market at the 2019 International Horticultural Expo underway in Beijing, China.

The exhibition started on April 29 and will run to October 7 2019.

On Wednesday, Malawi was offered a spot to sell its culture and heritage to other exhibitors through what is called Malawi Day.

Malawi’s Ambassador to China, Charles Namondwe, said China remains the hub of business opportunities for Malawi.

“There are a lot of opportunities here, especially for agriculture produces such as rice, beans and soya on top of the existing and stable exports market for tobacco, cotton, blue leather, coffee, tea and gemstones.” Namondwe said.

Malawi Investment and Trade Centre Director of Trade, Promotion and Facilitation, Cindy Kibombwe, said the platform was ideal for marketing Malawi as a tourist destination.

“Our focus was to attract investments, tourists and creating potential for trading with china.

Already, China is interested in trading with Africa; so, we came here to promote Malawi as an investment destination,” Kibombwe said.

Director of the Coordination Bureau of the Beijing Horticulture Expo, Zhou Jianping, said the Expo was created to connect business operators and promote international economic and trade exchange.

“We are confident that Malawi’s splendid exhibition will promote cooperation between China and Malawi’s trade, cultural exchange and other fields so that more countries including China will understand trade an investment opportunities in Malawi,” Jianping said.

The four-month expo has attracted over 15 million visitors from 110 countries, including Malawi.

Local exports to China have been dominated by tobacco. In 2017, Malawi’s total exports to China were valued at $41.7 million (about K 30 billion).
