Malawi tea firm wins international award
The Malawi tea sector has once again been put on the world map following an international accolade given to Wills and Alpha, producers of Williams Tea for the outstanding product at the North America Tea Conference.
The company was awarded a medal for producing best tea.
This comes barely a week after two other local tea producing companies, Eastern Produce Malawi (EPM) Limited and Satemwa Tea emerged winners of a Global Medal Te a Competition organised by the Tea Association of Canada.
Williams Tea Managing Director, William Sichinga, said the accolade entails the country has capacity to remain competitive on the global market.
He said, the company was eager to grow further and penetrate the international market.
“We are planning to sale huge volumes of the tea because there is now huge demand for the product on the international market. The award is a plus to us,” said Sichinga.
Commenting on trends on the local scene, Sichingasaid it was worrisome that local consumption of tea remains minimal.
According to Sichinga, at 2 percent, the consumption rate has to be revitalised as a mechanism of ensuring that the commodity also has a stable domestic market.
We look forward to a moment when we have a balance. Demand out there is so huge for tea and we as a country have to make the most of the existing potential and demand,” said Sichinga
