Malawi under-17 national football team defeated South Africa 2-1 at St Francois-Xavier Stadium in Mauritius yesterday to reclaim a bronze medal for the Cosafa Youth Championship, whose ultimate winners were Zambia.
Alex Tsamba scored a brace for the Deklerk Msakakuona side in the 27th and 50th minutes with Junior Nare reducing the arrears for South Africa. Malawi also produced man of the match in Auspicious Kadzongola.
Overall, Malawi won four out of five games after scoring 11 goals and conceding three— an impressive outing compared to the under-20 and the senior Flames who bowed out of their similar competitions recently without scoring.
In a late kick-off, Zambia beat Mauritius 3-0 at the same venue to lift the championship for the first time at this level of competition. Andrew Phiri, Prince Mumba and Kingsley Hakwiya scored for the young Chipolopolo.
