Malawi under-23 arrive in Egypt
By Williams Gondwa:
Malawi under-23 national football team has arrived in Cairo, Egypt, for a friendly against the young Pharaohs on Friday.
The team landed in the North African country on Sunday from Belgium where it played six training matches as part of preparations for two back-to-back under-23 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Zambia on March 20 and 26.
Flames assistant Coach, Peter Mponda, said the match against Egypt is a real test of Malawi’s readiness to face Zambia.
In the two-week training camp in Belgium, Malawi registered two wins, two losses and two draws.
Mponda said the Friday match would help the coaches to determine the right combinations for the Zambia encounter.
“The training camp in Belgium was a huge success. Of course, we had mixed results but what is most important is the performance. The Egypt match will give us the direction on selecting the final squad to face Zambia. With the crop of players at our disposal, we are confident that we will qualify for the next stage of the competition,” Mponda said.
The junior Flames return home on Saturday to continue with their preparations.
