Team Malawi is confident about increasing its medal tally in the ongoing Region 5 Youth Games in Lilongwe.
As of Tuesday, Team Malawi was on position six with 12 medals including one gold, six silver and five bronze.
South Africa led the medal tally with 49 medals comprising 27 gold, 14 silver and eight bronze.
eSwatini were second with five gold medals while Lesotho lay third with seven medals consisting of four gold and three bronze.
Malawi National Council of Sports Public Relations and Communications Officer Edgar Ntulumbwa said Team Malawi can improve its medal tally in the remaining days.
“It is too early to make any conclusions. We have chances to win more medals in different events. The athletes and their coaches are working hard to make this happen,” Ntulumbwa said.
Sports Council set a target of over 29 medals from the regional competition.
In other events held on Tuesday, Malawi women’s volleyball team lost 3-1 to Zimbabwe.
However, Malawi will still advance to the quarterfinals despite registering two loses.
The Malawi men’s side also advanced to the quarterfinals after beating Zambia 3-0 yesterday. The win came a day after the team’s loss to South Africa by a similar margin.
In basketball, Malawi’s men defeated Mozambique 69-48.
Team Malawi is yet to win anything in swimming and lawn tennis.
