Malawi women’s team improves on ranking

Malawi Women’s National Football Team has risen by 12 steps from 123 to position 111 on the Fifa/Coca-Cola Women’s Football Ranking released on Friday.

In Africa, Malawi is ranked 34th out of 54 teams with Nigeria on top of the continental pile while placed 34th in the world.

Malawi, coached by Stuart Mbolembole, have jumped up after playing friendlies against strong opposition, Tanzania and Zambia, who won 2-0 and 3-2, respectively, last year.

Germany are the highest ranked team in the world.

There are 184 recognised women’s national teams in the world, including those on the stand-by list due to their inactivity.

The movements on the table take into account teams that have risen from the stand-by list into the actual ranking comprising 115 teams.

Fifa website states that the latest table reflects 113 matches played over the past few months. The women’s football rankings are released quarterly.
