Malawi Writers Union changes dates for awards

Malawi Writers Union (Mawu) has changed dates for the Mawu/FMB Short Story and Religious Awards presentation.

The writer’s body’s Publicity Secretary, Pius Nyondo, said on Tuesday that the dates have been changed purely on administrative reasons.

Nyondo said the short story awards were expected to be held on December 3 but have been shifted to December 10.

He also said that the religious awards have been moved to December 17 from December 10.

“As I said the change of dates is purely administrative on the part of the sponsors, who will be comfortable with the new dates,” Nyondo said.

He said the two competitions this year received more entries compared to last year.

“As Mawu we are happy that this year the two competitions received more entries. For instance the story contest we received over 90 entries and we also received more women entries,” Nyondo said.

The past years has seen a low participation of women writers.

Nyondo said through the competitions Mawu wants to encourage more writers to come out.

“If we are to do well on the international platform then writers need to embrace these local competitions first. We actually would like to thank FMB for sponsoring the short story contest and Fattani for the religious contest. We hope other well wishers will come out to support us,” he said.

FMB has been sponsoring the short story competition since 2005.
