Five Malawian players managed to complete their deals with foreign teams before the International Transfer Window closed on midnight of January 31.

The players are midfielders Yamikani Chester, Chikoti Chirwa, striker Richard Mbulu (all Costal Do Sol, Mozambique), strikers Chawanangwa Kaonga (Zanaco) and Muhammad Sulumba, who signed a six-month contract with Al- Muharraq SC.

Football Association of Malawi (Fam) Compliance and Transfer Matching System Manager Casper Jangale said all the five players completed their transfers on time.

Flames midfielder Francisco Madinga also joined Botswana’s Morupule Wanderers after the expiry of his deal with Georgian club Dila Gori in December last year.

Free agent Chimwemwe Idana, who has been linked with several clubs, can join a club of his choice outside the transfer window.

Meanwhile, Zambian club Zanaco unveiled Kaonga on Thursday having signed one-year contract. Initially, Kaonga agreed a two-year contract with the club but Zanaco opted for one year due to unknown reasons.

His local manager Fred Kalonga said the deal had been completed.

“He is set to start new lease of life in Zambia. We are relieved that everything was completed before the transfer deadline,” Kaonga said.

The two teams agreed $25,000 (about K25 million) transfer fee for the player.

Kaonga is the first Malawian player to play for Zanaco.
