Malawian players in Mozambique cup semifinals

Malawian stars Chimango Kaira, Bright Munthali and Mathews Sibale are on course for glory in foreign land after helping their Mozambican side Vilankulo to the semifinals of the 2022 Taca Cup.

Also in the last four is Malawi National Football Team captain John Banda’s UD Songo.

However, the Malawians will not face each other in the semifinals as Vilankulo will line up against Ferroviario da Beira whereas Songo’s opponents at this stage are Ferraviario da Maputo.

Kaira said it was a motivation to play in the semifinals in his debut season.

“I am enjoying playing for Vilankulo. The coach has faith in me. I am playing regularly here,” he said.

Vilankulo featured Kaira, Munthali and Sibale in a 1-1 draw with Maputo on Sunday.

Kaira signed for Vilankulo after being offloaded at Nyasa Big Bullets alongside Munthali before the start of the season.

Munthali said he was focusing on helping Vilankulo move up the log table.

“I have settled well in the team. I started playing in June after waiting for my clearance for several months,” he said.

The former Bullets and Mighty Tigers striker has scored twice for his new team in the current Mocambola campaign.

Sibale also said he is hoping to end the season on a high by winning the cup.

“We will fight to win the cup after a bad season in the league,” the winner of the 2017 TNM Super League golden boot award said.

He clinched the accolade after scoring 16 goals in his debut season for Silver Strikers.

Munthali, Kaira, Sibale and Banda are the only recognisable players in Mozambique’s top flight.
