Malawians awarded agriculture scholarships

About 27 Malawians have received scholarships and awards in agriculture-related fields from the Institute of International Education (IEE).

The initiative was made possible through the institution’s Agricultural Transformation Initiative Fellowship and Scholarship Fund (ATI FSF), which aims at improving Malawi’s agricultural sector by reducing the country’s reliance on tobacco exports.

According to a statement issued by IEE, ATI FSF is targeting Malawians with interests in growing the country’s agricultural sector.

“As the world moves away from tobacco use, the ATI FSF seeks to support the ongoing education of Malawian citizens who are dedicated to diversifying and transforming the agricultural sector in Malawi.

“Awardees pursuing master’s degrees under the ATI FSF Scholars programme began their studies this January at higher education institutions in the United States,” the statement reads.

One of the beneficiaries, Takondwa Moyo, notes that the scholarship will help improve scholars’ skills.

“I believe that agricultural transformation, like any transformation, is a result of good policy. Pursuing economics, particularly policy economics, will place me at the frontline in helping make evidence-based policies,” she said.

The ATI FSF is providing 19 scholarships for master’s study and eight awards for postdoctoral research in agriculture, business, data science, economics, ecology/environment and engineering.
