Malawians can also be tourists—Lazarus Chakwera

By Cathy Maulidi:
President Lazarus Chakwera has asked Malawians to desist from the mentality of regarding people from developed countries as the only ones who can travel as tourists.
Chakwera said Malawians, too, can visit tourist attraction centres to appreciate the beauty of their country.
Chakwera was speaking Thursday in Lilongwe during the closing ceremony of the 2023 Malawi International Tourism Expo.
“In this global village, where people from everywhere are able to travel everywhere, we cannot afford to deprive ourselves of any markets,” he said.
Tourism Minister Vera Kamtukule has described this year’s tourism expo as a success.
“We, as a ministry, have been overwhelmed because we planned to have about 60 to 70 exhibitors but we had 115. This is first of its kind. More exhibitors were coming but we sent them back because of space,” Kamtukule said.
Meanwhile, Chairperson for Malawi Tourism Council Justin Dzinkambani has called on the government to improve some things so that tourists can get attracted to Malawi.
Dzinkambani said there is also a need to quickly work on road infrastructure to ease access to tourist destinations.
