Malawi’s Enock Banda whacks Ugandan national master

By Bernard Mhone:

Malawi’s International Master, Enock Banda, has defeated Uganda National Master Abubakar Lukwago in a 10-set International Online Checkers draught match played on Wednesday.

Banda won six sets against three with the other set ending goalless. The match was organised by African Draughts Federation.

The Malawian said he is aiming at improving on his performance at the African Draughts 64 Championship where he scooped a silver medal after finishing on second position with 6.5 points early this year.

“I was up against a top player with vast experience in draughts. Lukwago has played in several big tournaments, so winning with that margin against him is so inspiring and encouraging. I prepared very well knowing the kind of opponent I would face. I want to continue performing well so that I put my country on the map in draughts.

“I believe draughts is one game that can achieve a lot for Malawi. We recently won the best African player award and the best team in Africa accolade.

We are doing everything possible to maintain this status. Personally, I am dreaming of becoming a grandmaster. For me to achieve this, I need to win many games on the big stage,” Banda said.

Lukwago finished on third position after collecting the same number of points with Banda. The two were separated by the Buchhloz minus lowest rule with the Ugandan losing out.

Association of Draughts in Malawi President, John Ngwenya, said they are considering organising local online competitions to help keep athletes active during the sports suspension that the government declared in March to control the spread of coronavirus.

“Online games are very important. They are helping our athletes to continue performing well. It is good that they are continuing with training in their respective homes. We are delighted with Banda’s victory and we urge others to learn from him so that one day, we should have our own grand master,” Ngwenya said.
