Malindi Traveller Lodge develops Mangochi chess

Malindi Traveller Lodge has sponsored a secondary schools’ chess competition in Mangochi District to the tune of K100,000.

Chess Association of Malawi (Chessam) Vice-President, Mark Chikoko, owns the lodge.

Students in the district are competing in their respective schools with the best performers

qualifying for the finals scheduled for Tafika Lodge located in Mangochi Town.

Chikoko said incentives include chessboards and academic scholarships for five top performers at the finals.

He said Mangochi Chess Club Coordinator Kondwani Mamba is part of the organisation of the competition, which has been running for a year.

“Chess is gaining popularity in the district,” Chikoko said

Mamba, who is also Mangochi Chess Club Captain, said last month, four secondary schools from Majuni and St Pauls competed in a day-long tournament.

Students from Majuni Secondary School dominated the event.

Overall, Gift Pensulo, Rasho Nicks, Mayeso Dickson, Seleman William and Patricio Sitima scooped the top five positions to win academic scholarships and the chessboards.
