Ntcheu police have arrested a 30-year-old man for allegedly defiling and raping two step daughters on separate occasions in the district.
Ntcheu Police spokesperson, Hastings Chigalu, said the suspect lives with the two stepdaughters.
He said the suspect is married to the mother of the two victims—a 12-year-old standard four girl and her 21-year-old sister.
The girls were staying together with their parents.
“It is said that, late last year, the suspect defiled the 12-year-old girl in her room. This happened while the mother was away.
“Late in January this year, the young girl realised that she was pregnant and, after the encounter she had with her step father, she gathered courage to confront him,” Chigalu said.
He said the suspect secretly administered local herbs on the girl who aborted.
“However, the secret did not last long; events of the terminated pregnancy began to unfold. This alerted members of community policing in the area who reported the matter to Ntcheu Police. After playing hide-and-seek for days, the suspect was arrested,” he said.
The arrest prompted the elder sister of the victim to report to police that she was also sexually harassed by the father.
Chigalu said tests at Ntcheu District Hospital confirmed that the 12-year-old girl had aborted.
The suspect is remanded at Ntcheu Prison, waiting to answer defilement charges.
He is from Golimchimanga Village, Traditional Authority Mpando, in the district.
