Man arrested for possessing uterus
By Peter Kanjere:
A Blantyre-based business person has been arrested alongside two Thyolo District Hospital support staff who are suspected to have sold him a uterus at K50,000.
Blantyre Police spokesperson, Augustus Nkwazi, Tuesday identified the suspects as Manase Township businessperson, Richard Boyson, 38, the hospital’s messenger, Jam Chophika, 49, and labour ward attendant Bertha Nambuzi, 30.
Nkhwazi said they arrested Boyson, whose actual nature of the business is not known, after being tipped on January 17 2019 that he was keeping uterus.
“When quizzed about where he got the uterus, he mentioned the two suppliers of the same. He said it was meant to boost his undisclosed business,” Nkhwazi said.
He said the uterus has been sent to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) for an analysis.
However, QECH spokesperson, Themba Mhango, Tuesday said he was not aware that the hospital is analysing such a uterus.
The suspects will appear in court soon to answer charges of contravening the Anatomy Act, which can attract a jail term. The suspects did not disclose how they sourced the uterus and the police hope to get to the bottom of the issue after investigations.
