Man arrested for selling dog meat
Police in Balaka have arrested a 31 year-old man Ishmael Jumbe on allegation of selling fried dog meat.
The suspect was arrested following a complaint that he was seen selling the meat at Njerenje Trading Centre in the district.
“According to Group Village Head Phimbi, the issue came to light after a son of one of the men who ate the meat told his father that he saw the suspect skinning a dog at his home. The suspect revealed that he fried it and sold it as “kanyenya” at the Trading Centre,” said Balaka Police Spokesperson Joseph Sauka.
Sauka said through interrogation at the district police station, the suspect revealed that he started selling dog meat long time ago when he was living at Mbayani in Blantyre.
According to Sauka the suspect used to sell the meat at a tavern at night.
The police publicist said the suspect left Blantyre after death of his friend identified as Samson who he was selling the meat with.
Sauka added: “Ishmael said he bought the dog at the price of K1,000.00 at Njerenje Trading Centre as if he wanted to tame it. He also said that he sells the kanyenya at Shire Railway Station and Njerenje Trading Centre and that he also eats dog meat.”
Sauka said all the people who ate the meat were referred to Phimbi Health Centre where they were treated as outpatients.
Meanwhile, Jumbe is still in police custody and is to appear before a court soon where he will answer a case of conduct likely to cause a breach of peace which is contrary to section 181 of the Penal code.
He hails from Kangaude Village, Traditional Authority Nkaya in the district.
