Angry community members on Tuesday stormed Mangochi Police Station to demand the immediate arrest of some police officers whom they accused of taking part in a spate of armed robberies that have recently taken place in the district.

The angry residents on Monday morning took the matter into their own hands when they went door by door arresting people whom they suspected to have been involved in the robberies and handed them over to police.

The people’s action, among others, also helped to recover vehicles such as a Toyota Corolla VVTI with a foreign registration number and two plasma television sets.

Following the move, the police in the afternoon on Monday accompanied the concerned residents on an expedition which resulted in more arrests.

However, the situation changed when the arrested suspects started naming some police officers based at Mangochi Police Station as some of the people who were allegedly conniving with the robbers.

Mangochi Police spokesperson, Roderick Maida, confirmed the development but refused to divulge names of the concerned police officers, saying they were currently investigating their alleged involvement in matter.

“It is true that some police officers have been named in connection to robberies that have been happening in the country. But as police officers, we do not have evidence on that allegation. However, we are treating it as any other rumour and we are investigating to establish the truth,” he said.

Maida further said once investigations are over, the suspected police officers will be charged together with the other three suspects that have already been arrested and are currently being remanded at Mangochi Prison.

However, yesterday morning the angry residents convened at Mangochi Police Station, demanding the heads of the police officers whose names they publicly called out. The people also accused senior police officers of shielding the suspected police officers.
