Mangochi Police arrest Wizards FC
The amazing story of unfancied Premier Division side, Mangochi Police FC, continues as they qualified for the Carlsberg Cup semifinals after seeing off Wizards 3-2 on post-match penalties on Sunday.
Wizards were seen as favourites going into the quarterfinal match that was played at their home MDC Stadium.
But the Peter Mponda side, smarting from a 6-0 league hammering by Blue Eagles at Nankhaka on Wednesday, did not live up to expectations.
The match had ended goalless in regulation time.
During the penalties, Police scored through Wellington Brake, Foxy Michila and Rabson Bwanali whereas Blessings Kanyenda and Charles Douglas had their penalties saved.
Wizards converted through Hendrix Misinde and Phillip Chirwa whereas Keston Masonda and the Joseph brothers missed.
Police will now meet Be Forward Wanderers in the semi-finals.
Wanderers narrowly beat Prison United 1-0 on Saturday to advance into the last four.
Wizards Technical Director Peter Mponda said the defeat was hard to accept.
Mangochi Police patron, Elijah Kachikuwo, said the result was a gift for the people of Mangochi.
Mangochi are now the only surprise team in the last-four.
