CONSTRUCTION of Mangochi Stadium has been completed and the facility is hosting lower league football matches.

The stadium is the second— after the likes of Mulanje Park Stadium—to be completed out of the five match venues whose construction commenced in 2015 under the Local Development Fund.

Three other stadiums in Karonga, Kasungu and Rumphi districts are also expected to be ready before the end of the year.

Mangochi District Football Committee Chairperson, Darwin Nhlane, said the stadium has hosted six matches.

“We are very pleased that we now have a stadium to host our matches. It is like a dream come true after a long wait,” Nhlane said.

Mangochi Town Council Chairperson, Ibrahim Kacheya, said the stadium was contributing to the council’s finances through gate collections.

Southern Region Football Association Chairperson, Raphael Humba, said he visited the stadium to watch matches.

“We are happy for the people of Mangochi. They have a stadium that can even host Super League games,” Humba said, adding that the stadium hosted the district’s Presidential Cup finals last week.

This week, the stadium will host a Premier Division match between Mangochi United and Hardknockers on Saturday.

The Mangochi venue is also expected to host a Carlsberg Cup encounter involving MDF Marine and Jidi FC on Saturday, with spectators paying K500 at the open stands and K1,000 for the VIP.
