Margaret Mkwanda triumphs in Sparc Systems golf

Veteran Margaret Mkwanda underlined her composure when she won the championship for Sparc Systems Golf Tournament at Blantyre Sports Club (BSC) on Saturday.

It was a ladies’ tournament but 52 men were invited to participate in a separate category.

Mkwanda, playing off handicap 30, scored a gross of 103 and 73 net to emerge champion and was followed by BSC’s Ladies’ Golf Captain, Connie Muguvu-Karuku, who grossed 95 and 77 net. Karuku was playing off handicap 16.

Doreen Kavala, playing off handicap 16, finished third.

Jolene Bapu-Pereira, playing off handicap 24, was on fourth position.

Mkwanda said it was a memorable victory having failed to win in previous tournaments.

“Previously, I had been finishing on second and third positions, but this time, the grass was smooth and it made my play easier. I also salute Sparc Systems for supporting golf with fabulous prizes. I also had a wonderful time with my playing partners, including Wilma Chalulu,” she said.

In the men’s category, Bashir Shariff, playing off handicap 22, finished first with a gross of 87 and 65 net.

Donbell Mandala, playing off handicap 15 and with 84 gross and 69 net, finished on second place. Gabriel Kambale, playing off handicap four, ended on third position with a gross of 75 and 69 net.

In individual awards, Furkani Gani hit the longest drive on hole two in the men’s category whereas Bose Kamphulusa won the women’s equivalent on hole eight.

Charles Merrick shot nearest to-the pin on hole one.

Sparc Systems Managing Director, Wisely Phiri, said they returned to BSC with the tournament to fulfill a pledge they made earlier this year.

“You might recall that we promised to sponsor another golf tournament here at Blantyre Sports Club following the success of the first one. We had another one in Lilongwe, which was also exciting. We organised the tournament to get feedback from our clients,” he said.
