Martin Lurther claim netball trophy
Martin Lurther Academy from Blantyre beat Athens Private Secondary School 30- 27 to win the championship of K600, 000 Starfoam Industries Inter-Schools Netball Trophy on Saturday.
The academy received K65,000 and a mattress for each player for winning the two-week competition, which involved six secondary school teams from South-West Education Division.
Mattress manufacturer, Starfoam Industries, sponsored the event . Starfoam Accountant, Golden Khungwa, said they were impressed with the talent that was on display during the tournament.
“The aim of the competition was to keep girls away from immoral behaviour by giving them something to make them busy. We also wanted to create competition among the six schools, which just play friendly games. We have been encouraged to come back with more than this [sponsorship],” Khungwa said.
Malawi Schools Sports Association (Blantyre Urban) vice Chairperson, Mwendera Kaleya, urged top netball teams to scout for talent from the tournament. Runners-up and headmasters from the two finalists also received mattresses.
