Martse hospitalised

Renowned musician Martse, real name Martin Nkhata, has been admitted to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre following a fire accident in Monkey Bay, Mangochi District, on Saturday.

The artist, famed for songs such as ‘Mwano’, is being treated for wounds he sustained when a house he slept in caught fire.

Monkey Bay Police spokesperson Alice Sichali said there were four people inside the house when it caught fire.

“There was the owner of the house, his wife, their little child and Martse by the time the house caught fire. What we have gathered is that Martse was visiting them, and when the house caught fire, all the other members managed to flee through windows but it appears Martse did not manage to find his way out, being a visitor,” Sichali said.

She further said some people rushed to the house and managed to rescue Martse before he was taken to Monkey Bay Community Hospital where he was referred to Mangochi District Hospital.

“After examinations at Mangochi District Hospital, Martse was rushed to Zomba, where he stayed briefly before being referred to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre for specialised treatment,” she said.

Sichali said police were investigating the cause of the fire, which destroyed all property in the house.

Meanwhile, fellow artists and other players yesterday took to social media to wish Martse quick recovery.

“Let us pray for Martse so that he can recover soonest,” Gwamba said.

Soldier Lucius Banda, who is also Presidential Adviser on Arts and Youth, said: “I have learned with shock about the sad incident that has happened to one of our fellow artists Martse. I pray to God that he gets well soonest”.

Keturah of the ‘Nambewe’ fame said: “We love you so much Martse. Get well soon dear brother.”
