Former Malawi netball Queens coach, Mary Waya, has partnered Limbe Police in sensitising communities around Chigumula Township in Blantyre against violence on people with albinism.
Waya, through her academy and the police, on Friday dated pupils and communities around Chimaliro Primary School where, among other things, she donated match-balls and sunglasses to people with albinism.
“I t came to my attention that most of the times, we neglect people with albinism. They are people like us; we can train them in sports, and they may be productive in the game. We can produce good players, coaches and umpires from them,” she said.
Association of People with Albinism in Malawi Blantyre Chairperson, Francis Masambuka, commended Waya for the initiative.
“Apart from the balls which Waya donated, her presence alone has encouraged the girls to work hard in sports. We are very happy for the recognition,” he said.
Limbe Police publicist, Chifundo Kansunje, said the relationship between the police and Waya would go a long way in curbing violence against people with albinism.
