Organisers of Maso Awards said Monday they were geared to make history as they will be decorating artists with 30 awards in 30 categories, including Lifetime Achievement to old-timer Giddes Chalamanda.

This year has seen organisers expanding their base from music to other artistic disciplines such as visual arts, comedy, photography, film, poetry, graphic design, theatre and fashion design.

The red carpet event, now in its fourth edition, will also be running at a bigger venue, Amaryllis Hotel in Blantyre, for the first time since its inception.

“These are steady walks. Challenges will always be there but we are ready and the key things are in place. It feels great for us that we will be honouring and appreciating artists in different categories. Our dominance was in music the past three years but we have covered other arts sectors as well,” the awards Chief Executive Officer Augustine Mukisi said.

Apart from decorating Chalamanda of the ‘Liny’ fame with the Lifetime Achievement Award, Mukisi said they will be giving the Humanitarian Award to Monsoor Karim, the brains behind K Motors.

Last year, the Lifetime Achievement Award went to Soldier Lucius Banda, who next month will be launching his 20th album titled Love and Hate.

Chalamanda will be receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award, having also been decorated early this year by Musicians Union of Malawi (Mum) Southern chapter.

Some of the acts set to perform at the awards include The Daredevils, Delois Massey from United States of America (USA), Driemo, Tuno and My Soul Vocals.

“We are thankful to all players who have supported us and they include Amaryllis Hotel, which is doing a lot for the creative industry, and we also have Fadeth Furnishers,” Mukisi said.

Last year, the awards took place at Jacaranda Cultural Centre in Blantyre and saw winners such as Patience Namadingo, Keturah Driemo, Phyzix, Pemphero Mphande and Wendy Harawa.

Some of the categories in the awards include Song of the Year, which has Piksy’s track ‘Itsanana’, Eli Njuchi’s ‘Gugugu’, Onesimus’ ‘Open Your Heart’, Driemo’s ‘Weniweni’ and Temwa and Zeze Kingston’s ‘Mvetsela’.

The category of Male Artist of the Year has names such as Driemo, Njuchi, Gwamba, Piksy and Onesimus whereas the Female Artist of the Year category has Toriah, Temwa, Leslie, Tuno and Keturah.
