Masters bolstering squad for Caf
TNM Super League survivors, Masters Security, FC have said they will raid the market once the transfer window opens in a bid to bolster their squad for the Caf (Confederation of African Football) Confederation Cup.
Masters may have been in danger of being relegated from the top flight league, but were courageous enough to shock the soccer fraternity by registering for the second tier continental showpiece.
In an interview on Wednesday, Masters Head Coach, Abasi Makawa, said his side needed massive reinforcements before the start of the competition.
“This is a big competition and we need a very good squad to avoid embarrassment. We have some players who can play at that level but we need to add at least four to five good players to compete better,” Makawa said.
The former Epac FC mentor, whose side is just four points above the relegation zone with two games remaining, said it is important for the team to leave a mark in the tournament and not just add numbers.
Masters are 13th on the log table with 28 points from 26 games after stringing together several wins to escape relegation.
Last weekend, the rookies lost 3-1 to relegation-bound Blantyre United at MDC Stadium in Blantyre.
The team’s General Secretary, Zacharia Nyirenda, confirmed that the technical panel was working on beefing up the squad ahead of the team’s maiden appearance on the international stage.
“They know the challenge ahead of us and I am sure they have already identified the targets. We want to be part of history for Malawi football,” Nyirenda said.
Masters reached the semi-finals of this year’s Fisd Challenge Cup but were knocked out when they lost 4-3 to Kamuzu Barracks on post-match penalties at Civo Stadium.
Last season, Masters signed 22 players—including Sam Gunda, Wyson Nkhana, Eneya Banda, Vincent Nyangulu and Tsanzo Dalio—as they embarked on their first ever Super League campaign.
The Lilongwe-based side is the second Malawian club to register for next year’s Caf competitions after Be Forward Wanderers confirmed their participation in the Champions League.
