Masters target two Wizards

Premier Bet Wizards’ goalkeeper Bester Phiri and midfielder Eneya Banda are on their way to newly-promoted Masters Security FC in Lilongwe.

Wizards’ Technical Director, Peter Mponda, Wednesday confirmed that the 2016 Chipiku Premier Division champions were courting Phiri and Banda who, until last season, were in Be Forward Wanderers and Nyasa Big Bullets’ books respectively.

“I have given Masters permission to talk to the players. They can go for free,” Mponda said.

However, it appears that Masters will also have to talk to Wanderers over Phiri, who is believed to have a running contract at the Lali Lubani Road.

Masters’ Head Coach, Benjamin Kumwenda, yesterday confirmed that the duo’s names were tabled during a meeting held on Saturday to, among others, come up with an executive committee.

“From the squad of 25 players we had last season, we want to maintain 12 and beef up with experienced players. There are the positions which I indicated to the executive. We need two experienced goalkeepers as the five we used to feature last season have never played in the Super League,” Kumwenda explained.

“It was when we were discussing with Wanderers over Precious Msosa [a former Nomad] that we also told them about our need for a goalkeeper. They suggested Bester and Peter Munthali to see if we can get them either on loan or otherwise.”

Last season, Masters featured goalkeepers such as Clifford Jekapu and Effort Mahara.

Masters are aware that next season will be tough as their only experienced campaigners are Msosa and captain Dalitso Siliva, formerly of Bullets.

“We need to build on these two players. Our aim is to become a giant on the local scene,” Kumwenda said.

“We also need two experienced defenders, two strikers and two midfielders. We need Eneya to beef up the attacking midfield, which currently has Walika Mhango and Charles White, who are equally good.”

Masters have since come up with a committee which team owner, Alfred Gangata is chairing with Zakaria Nyirenda serving as the General Secretary. The rookies have also earmarked African Bible College ground as their base.

The team will resume training on January 31.
