Mathews Sibale upbeat on Golden Boot
Mozambique-bound hit-man, Mathews Sibale, has said he would like to sign off the TNM Super League by winning the Golden Boot Award.
Sibale signed a pre-contract with Mozambique giants, Costa do Sol, ahead of the January transfer window after his impressive performances with Silver Strikers.
With four games to wind up the season, Sibale is the leading goal-scorer with 13 goals for Silver Strikers, one goal above Mphatso Philimon of Blue Eagles.
The former TN Stars striker (Sibale) said he will do everything possible to claim the award.
“My job is to score goals and I am happy that team-mates have helped me a lot this season. For sure, I want to win it because it will be a motivation for me before I go to Mozambique,” Sibale said.
Philimon has also taken the league by storm, and he is equally confident of overtaking Sibale in the battle for award.
“It has been a wonderful debut season for me in the top-flight league. I did not expect to score more goals because the league is tough. I hope [that] I will have another successful season next year,” Philimon, the former Ntchisi Medicals striker, said.
Local strikers have struggled to hit the 20-goal mark for the past five seasons. Last season, former Mafco forward Richard Mbulu won the Golden Boot with 19 goals, two goals ahead of Chiukepo Msowoya and three in front of Be Forward Wanderers striker, Peter Wadabwa.
In 2015, Msowoya and Red Lions striker Innocent Bokosi shared the accolade with 14 goals.
In the late 1990s and early 2000, strikers such as Aggrey Kanyenda, Ganizani Malunga, Bob Mpinganjira and Heston Munthali could score 28 league goals. Mpinganjira could score eight goals in a single game for Wanderers.
