Matthews Sibale two goals clear

Silver Strikers forward Matthews Sibale has gone two goals clear in the race for the 2017 TNM Super League Golden Boot Award, following his exploits over the weekend.

Sibale turned from hero to villain at Silver Stadium on Sunday when he grabbed a brace to hand leaders Be Forward Wanderers a 2-1 defeat, only for the striker to be sent for an early shower after a second bookable offence.

Sibale will miss three of Silver’s remaining 10 league games, thereby giving a chance to Blue Eagles’ Mphatso Filimoni who has 10 goals.

The Silver and Eagles strikers, plus the likes of Chiukepo Msowoya (Nyasa Big Bullets) and Be Forward Wanderers’ Esau Kanyenda, who are scoring for fun, have a mighty task to match the 19 goals which Richard Mbulu scored last season while playing for Mafco.

Mbulu joined Costa do Sol of Mozambique this season. No local striker has scored 20 league goals in over a decade.

So far, 354 goals have been scored in 161 games.

Second-placed Silver trail Wanderers by five points in the league race.

Silver, who have 42 points from 20 games, remain unbeaten in the league.

Bullets, Nomads and Silver have not lost at home whereas Eagles’ unbeaten home run ended after Sunday’s 2-0 loss to Wanderers.

The Nomads have won the most (eight games) on the road.

Bottom-placed Chitipa United have collected just a single point away and are the highest conceding team with 42 goals.

Civil Sporting Club are the highest scoring team with 32 goals whereas Bullets have conceded the least goals (six) in the league.
