The Malawi Writers Union (Mawu)/FMB Awards will be held Saturday at FMB Headquarters in Blantyre.
Mawu President Sambalikagwa Mvona confirmed in an interview on Wednesday that the awards which attracted over 100 entries this year will be held on Saturday.
“We just want to call upon all writers to patronise the awards ceremony and be part of this year’s event,” said Mvona.
The Mawu/FMB Awards comes barely a month after the writer’s body celebrated its 20th anniversary and also decorated writers in the Peer Gynt Awards which this year focused on children’s stories.
The Mawu/FMB Awards have been running for years with sponsorship from FMB Bank and has seen several writers being decorated.
The guidelines in the competition entailed that writers should be citizens of Malawi including those in Diaspora and that stories were expected to be original and not previously published.
The stories were also expected to be on any topic and not exceed 2,000 words.
The awards ceremony will see the winner receiving K200,000 with the runner up getting K100,000.
The third prize will see the winner receiving K70,000 while the Best Women entry will pocket K30,000 with the most imaginative writer also receiving K30,000.
There will also be two consolation prizes of K15,000 each.
Mvona hailed FMB for its continued sponsorship in the Mawu/FMB Awards stressing that the competition has helped unearth a new bleed of writers.
FMB showed its commitment to helping propel the creative industry in the country when it increased the prizes for this year’s awards by 20 percent.
