Mayhem in Mpemba

There were disturbing scenes in Mpemba yesterday as angry family members abandoned the dead body of their father at a shop whose owner the family accuses of playing a role in the deceased death.

According to the deceased son, Saidi Watison, the father, who was 65 years old, was working for a woman known as Mimi Somba and the deceased was accused to have stolen sweet potato.

The man was later arrested and fell sick in police custody before being taken to the hospital where he died which prompted the family to get angry.

“My father has worked for her[Mimi Somba] for a long time but we were surprised when we heard that he has been arrested for stealing three potatoes, the most disappointing thing is that my father and his friend who were accused were found not guilty of the charges against them,” explained Watison .

When The Daily Times visited the scene there were a lot of people near the shop where the lifeless body of Piason Kajombo was left.

The visibly and audibly grief stricken Watisoni said the family decided to leave their father’s body at the shop because they felt he was pushed to his untimely death.

But Blantyre Police publicist, Elizabeth Divala, said the deceased was given a suspended sentence by the court but because he didn’t understand the sentence he fainted.

“I t maybe that the deceased didn’t understand what a suspended sentence is that is why he fainted, he was rushed to the hospital where he died on Saturday, said Divala.

Somba, however, was not around for a comment and her phone could not be reached.
