Mayor arrested over defilement

Police in Mzuzu have arrested Mayor for the city Councillor Gift Desire Nyirenda on suspicion that he defiled his 14-year-old niece.

Nyirenda was picked from his residence in Nkhorongo- Luwinga in the early hours of Sunday.

According to Mzuzu Police Public Relations Officer, Paul Tembo, Nyirenda allegedly defiled the Standard Seven learner over five times and threatened that he would kill her if she revealed the ordeal to anyone.

“On the night of August 2 Nyirenda reportedly came again but the girl rejected his advances. Then on the night of 3-4 August 2022, he came again and defiled her more than once,” Tembo said.

Apparently, Nyirenda promised to buy the girl a cell phone for easy communication but she did not agree with that.

Tembo said after reporting the matter to the maid and her aunt without being helped, the girl took it upon herself to report her experience to Mzuzu Police Station.

By the time we went to press, the girl was at Mzuzu Police Station Victim Support Unit while the mayor was still in police custody.

Malawi Local Government Association Executive Director, Hadrod Mkandawire, said it was too early to comment on the allegations as the mayor has not yet been formally charged by the court.

“He is just a suspect but the moment he is charged, we will take it from there,” Mkandawire said.

Child-rights activist Amos Chibwana urged all concerned stakeholders to ensure the trial is handled in a professional manner to its conclusion.

Authorities are attributing the rise in reported cases of defilement to awareness among people on what entails defilement.
