Mzuzu City Mayor Councillor William Mkandawire has laughed off Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Kondwani Nankhumwa’s threat that the Mayor would be summoned for disciplinary hearing for travelling to China without the ministry’s nod.
Mkandawire and two councillors, Lusubilo Mwangonde of Jombo Ward and Gadi Mwaungulu of Chibavi West, left the country on August 23 for China on a trip whose details were sketchy. They returned last week.
Nankhumwa told this paper that the Mayor did not seek his ministry’s permission to travel to China and that he did not provide details of the trip. Nankhumwa also alleged that Mkandawire and the two councillors forced Mzuzu City Council secretariat to release allowances.
But in an interview yesterday, Mkandawire while saying he did not want to comment on the issue, said he did not fear what Nankhumwa said and that he would provide details of the trip to the city residents at some time.
Said Mkandawire: “I have no comment on the China trip. Nkhuopa chilichose yaye, pa vyose vyayowoyeka, [I do not fear what the Minister has said]. I went there for development.”
Mkandawire said that he would not comment further, accusing the one who leaked the information about the trip as lacking details.
But Mwangonde said the meeting was for leaders in local government. He defended the team, saying they were clean. He said they were waiting for the ministry to summon them and the Mayor being leader of delegation, would go and present the report.
Nankhumwa told this paper in an earlier interview: “The Mayor will face disciplinary action. He and the two councillors did not write the ministry to seek approval to travel as is required. They did not even show any evidence of where they were going.
“They did not include any technical member on the trip who would take minutes. All those are politicians. Who will report back? They even pushed for the allowances as if it was a battle. It became so personal and secretariat just released the money.”
