Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development has shifted dates for mayoral elections from June 25 to 28 2019 to accommodate members of Parliament who are voting members of councils.

A circular The Daily Times has seen, which the ministry’s secretary Charles Kalemba has signed, notes that, on June 25 2019, the MPs would be in Parliament.

“The ministry has, however, noted that Parliament will be in session during this time. The ministry wishes to advise all the local authorities that the date for conducting the first counci l meeting has been slightly shifted to Saturday 28 June 2019 in order to allow members of Parliament to participate in this important council meeting since they are also voting members of the council,” the circular reads.

In accordance with the Local Government Act, specifically Section 7, all local authorities are expected to conduct their first council meeting where they elect the council leadership.

According to recently reviewed guidelines for conducting local authority business, first council meetings are conducted on the same day for all councils.
