Mayors’ seats up for grabs

Terms of office for Lilongwe, Blantyre, Zomba and Mzuzu mayors have expired, clearing the way for fresh elections, The Daily Times understands.

The Ministry of Local Government has, through a memo addressed to city councils, reminded council officials that a mayor serves for two-and-a-half years, further indicating that the term of office for Blantyre, Mzuzu, Zomba and Lilongwe city mayors expired earlier this month.

The memo, therefore, reminds council officials about procedures to be followed when conducting elections for mayors and their deputies.

Lilongwe City Council spokesperson

Tamara Chafunya confirmed receiving the memo and said the council would hold the elections on December 22 this year.

Chafunya said the council had called for nominations but said, as of Thursday, the office of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) had not yet received any nomination.

“We are set and the council has called for nominations. We are going to hold the elections on December 22 2021 and all is set for the electoral full council meeting,” Chafunya said.

Blantyre City Council spokesperson Deborah Luka said the council had settled for January 22 2022 as the date for the elections.

However, Luka could not be drawn to comment on whether the council had received any nomination.

At Mzuzu City Council (MCC), elections are expected to be held on December 17 2021.

However, MCC CEO Gomezgani Nyasulu said the date was subject to change as some councillors asked the council to push the polls to January next year.

Apparently, as of Thursday, the council had not received any nomination.

“We planned [to have the elections on] December 17 but we have received a report that some councillors had are opting for another day. So, what we have done is to let them discuss and inform us about the day they are comfortable with,” Nyasulu said.

Zomba City Council currently has no spokesperson and other officials could not be reached for a comment but a senior councillor said two people had expressed interest in contesting in the election, which he indicated could be held between December and February next year.

Kondwani Brian Nyasulu has been serving as Mzuzu City Mayor, with Juliana Kaduya playing the role in Lilongwe City, Wild Ndipo in Blantyre and Benson Bullah in Zomba City.

Ministry of Local Government spokesperson Anjoya Mwanza said in a separate interview that the ministry’s role would be to offer guidance on how the polls ought to be conducted.
