Mayors’ Trophy finals on

Organizers of the Blantyre City Mayors’ Trophy have described today’s finals at Kamuzu Stadium as a giant step in the development of sports at grassroots level.

A member of the organising committee, Egnazio Libwaloh, said apart from exciting netball and football matches, several other activities have been lined up to entertain sports lovers.

Libwalo cited a football match between the Blantyre City Councilors, including Mayor Noel Chalamanda and city council staff.

“The day will be full of fan and I am urging people to come in their multitudes to bear witness to the exceptional skills of our boys and girls in football and netball. I also invite city residents to come out and watch their Mayor play football,” Libwaloh, who is also Chairman for the Malawi Schools Sports Association, said.

He said the trophy will be paraded prior to the commencement of the day’s activities expected to be presided over by Labour, Youth, Sports and Manpower Development Minister, Henry Mussa.

Libwaloh said despite some glitches that blighted the event tournament like age cheating, small pockets of violence and late registration, the tournament has largely progressed well.

“We are happy that as the tournament is coming to an end, we have something to show for it. A lot of talent has been unearthed and we are asking city residents to come in their large numbers to see for themselves,” Libwaloh said.

The winner in football will get K400,000 with the runner up pocketing K300,000 while in netball, K300,000 will go the winner and the runner up will get K200, 000.

Two semifinalists in football will get K200, 000 each while K120, 000 will go to the netball teams.

Quarterfinalists in football will be rewarded with K100,000 and K70, 000 for the two netball teams that reached this stage.

Top scorers in both football and netball will also be given prizes together with the best player.

In the football finals, Naizi Primary School face Makata Primary School and in netball, Mbayani Primary School take on Chilomoni LEA School.

Companies like Bata Shoe Company, KIPS, Into-Sport, First Merchant Bank and Dairiboard, among others, have made various donations to support the tournament.

Presentation of the trophy will take place at Blantyre City Council’s Civic Offices.
