Mayor’s Trophy receives support

Gift of the Givers Foundation, a charitable organisation, Thursday donated towards Blantyre City Mayor’s Trophy to the tune of K700 000.

Presenting the donation, the foundation’s Chairperson, Gaffar Jakhura, applauded Mayor Noel Chalamanda for revamping the trophy, which aims at engaging and empowering primary schools pupils in the city through sports.

“Gift of the Givers Foundation is determined to push the agenda of sports being championed by the Blantyre City Council, through the Mayor’s Trophy, because this is where we can only harness the future stars in as far as football and netball are concerned,” Jakhura said.

“Our contribution of K 700,000 has been made in order to ensure that the junior citizens, who love football and netball in Blantyre City, are stimulated to discover their potential so that they become professionals who can ably put Malawi on the map in the future.”

He added: “Pursuit of excellence in football and netball at the grassroots is what we should all aim to achieve. We, therefore, commend the Mayor of Blantyre City for this initiative.”

Accepting the donation, Chalamanda thanked Gift of the Givers Foundation for supporting the revival of the trophy, which has produced sports legends such as Mary Waya in netball and Joseph Kamwendo in football.

“On behalf of myself and the Mayor’s Trophy team and indeed the entire council, I am grateful for your kindness. Your donation will go a long way in kick-starting the tournament,” Chalamanda said.

This year’s edition of the tournament will draw 84 primary school football and netball teams from Blantyre Urban.

During the launch of the trophy by the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Kondwani Nankhumwa on September 21, Chalamanda urged the corporate world to support the competition.

Nankhumwa pledged K1 million towards the 2016 competition’s budget, which is pegged at K10 million.
